Every summer, 3rd Wind Network gathers a group of volunteers to serve as Summer Reading Buddies, a seasonal initiative offered by JCY-Westchester Community Partners. This program helps students (typically of low income and/or children of English as a Second Language families) work on their reading skills developed over the school year while avoiding Summer Slide, a phenomenon where students lose academic aptitude if not consistently practiced over the summer school break.
This year, members of 3rd Wind Network's Dine & Discuss* group rose to the occasion and spent a Wednesday morning sharing their love of the written word with children at the Yonkers Riverfront Library. Volunteers were unanimously pleased with the experience. For some, this was an eye opener about the state of our education system, both good and bad. For others this was a call to action, inspiring them to pursue future volunteer opportunities in support of the eager minds of tomorrow.
*Dine & Discuss is 3rd Wind Network's book club. We meet monthly at local restaurants in the southern Westchester and northern Bronx region to discuss a particular book and be among friends. For more information about Dine & Discuss click here.
